This is a view of our telephone and network wiring closet. Below the cart is an inverted top of a GTE phone booth. I use it as a storage receptacle. I have some supplies and equipment in there. On the cart above that is, from right to left, the following:
Telephone connection block Our house was only wired for 3 phone lines (who did they think that would be enough for?). I ran extra wiring to all the jacks to accommodate additional lines, and it all terminates on this block. I also added new jacks and terminated the wiring here.
Caller Id server For our phone system we use AT&T 4-line + intercom phones (model 854). They have Caller Id capabilities, but only in conjunction with this server, which captures the Caller Id and sends it to all the 854s. It looks like an old external modem, which in essence it is.
Hub This hub runs our in-house network and connects pensive.org to the Internet via...
Motorola Cable Modem This cable modem gives us nice high-speed connections (when the big neighborhood LAN is not too busy) to the Internet.
Network patch panel The patch panel is the connection point for all our CAT 5 network wiring, which I have run into every room of the house.
The flashing lights of these boxes are interesting to look at sometimes, and since this picture was taken, two more devices with flashing lights have been added: an Asanté bridge to allow us to address LocalTalk devices over EtherTalk, and a PhoneNet LocalTalk adapter plugged into it.
